The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people whatever they need to have done, but cannot do at all, or cannot do so well for themselves, in their separate and individual capacities.(p.80)
When Congress met early in December, the perplexed and venerable Buchanan, fearful of secession but still sympathetic toward his Southern friends and the Southern point of view, asserted in his annual message that while a state could not lawfully secede, neither could the Federal government coerce it. He proposed to quiet Southern fears by calling a constitutional convention to frame amendments guaranteeing slavery in the states and territories, and assuring the recovery of runaway slaves.(p.228)
The way forward.
My fellow Americans, we have won a critical victory to be sure; but the victory we have won is just one battle, the war is far from over. Any sign of being at rest, will be interpreted as a sign of weakness, we must push-on. I've been reading about Lincoln, and from what I've read so far. I feel like the old "whigs" or the republican party as they would become to be known as, had the same trouble with the democrats, that we are having today. President Obama, while he wanted to appear contrite, don't be fooled, again he attempts to deceived, he was trying to divert your attention from a renewed attempt to unite with progressives in the republican party, to continue his agenda to destroy the constitution, to destroy capitalism, to make America in to a communist country. Keep your eye on the ball!
The year is 1856, four months before Lincoln was to take office. When Congress met early in December, the perplexed and venerable Buchanan, fearful of secession but still sympathetic toward his Southern friends and the Southern point of view, asserted in his annual message that while a state could not lawfully secede, neither could the Federal government coerce it. He proposed to quiet Southern fears by calling a constitutional convention to frame amendments guaranteeing slavery in the states and territories, and assuring the recovery of runaway slaves. Now, the reason I put this excerpt in is I get the impression from the president that he feels like he is king. From the book, I get the impression that a state cannot secede from the union; but the Federal government cannot coerce a state into doing a thing or not taking an action. As I understand, what I've learned, the president has no grounds to enforce his health care law. Or for that matter, a lot of other things he is trying to force on us.
"The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people whatever they need to have done, but cannot do at all, or cannot do so well for themselves, in their separate and individual capacities." Abraham Lincoln
