The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people whatever they need to have done, but cannot do at all, or cannot do so well for themselves, in their separate and individual capacities.(p.80)
When Congress met early in December, the perplexed and venerable Buchanan, fearful of secession but still sympathetic toward his Southern friends and the Southern point of view, asserted in his annual message that while a state could not lawfully secede, neither could the Federal government coerce it. He proposed to quiet Southern fears by calling a constitutional convention to frame amendments guaranteeing slavery in the states and territories, and assuring the recovery of runaway slaves.(p.228)
"Choice?"
Choice? I think, that the law should not be governing what we eat. Now, I agree with the ban on trans-fats, on smoking in restaurants; I'm like Ben Franklin, "The right to punch you in the nose, ends where your nose begins." I also believe that the restaurants should print the contents of their dishes; so people can decide for themselves weather or not they can eat them. I don't think we need the food police. Adults know what their doctors say they can have and what they should avoid, to have a healthy diet. I do not, and I will not have (big-brother) the government telling me what I can eat and what I cannot eat. First, if sodium is the problem, use sea-salt; it should be up to the individual. You know what your doctor says. You don't need to be told. I, also know it is the people who run this country, and just because a small minority of the population wants or doesn't want something - mean that we should be bound by their wishes. I think as long as it does not infringe on the rights of others then "We the people" should be the ones who decide. That's my opinion! So, if I want to smoke, I can smoke, if I want to eat salt I can salt my food. I just have to smoke outside or at home; if I want to eat transfat, I need to eat it at home, if I want to eat salt I can. I do think restaurants should post the ingredients of a dish on the menu. Why, well just as the ingredients are on a can of soup you buy has the ingredients on the label, so should the menu in a restaurants.
